Stratigraphy
Reading the order of events from the order of the layers in the ground.
Layers of soil and debris build up over time, so what lies deeper is, with care, older. An excavation records which layer each find came from, and dates from one layer bound the layers around it. Göbekli Tepe, Gunung Padang and the Younger Dryas sites are all argued through stratigraphy: what is a buried structure and what is natural rock, which layer a sample dates, whether a layer was disturbed.

The core is a volcanic body with natural columnar jointing; the deep layers are weathered and slumped columns and soil, and nothing inside was built.
