Research session 1 · Cretan Hieroglyphic

Cretan Hieroglyphic seeded: corpus, readings and open data

Seeded the Cretan Hieroglyphic mystery: corpus and editions, the seals-as-writing debate, the relation to Linear A, the published readings, the restricted digital resources, and the questions and tests that would move the problem.

Session 131 Oct 202618 evidence

In brief

  1. No word of Cretan Hieroglyphic has been read; the only language hypothesis with a specialist following is that it writes the Minoan language of Linear A, and it has been tested only by one contested statistical comparison.
  2. The live scholarly problems are prior to decipherment: which seal marks are writing, how many signs there are (144 in CHIC, about 98 after the 2021 review) and whether the Archanes seals belong to this script.
  3. There is no open machine-readable corpus and no Unicode encoding; a sign-level table of the CHIC clay documents is the first step for any test.
What this changes: New mystery: six key questions opened, none answered; the Minoan-language answer leads only weakly.

What was done

  1. Read the Linear A and Phaistos Disc records and the reference records for house style, and checked which places, figures and sources already existed (Crete, Heraklion museum, Phaistos, Arkalochori cave, Scripta Minoa I, Duhoux 2000, Davis 2018, Corazza 2021, Salgarella 2020) [@evans1909scripta] [@duhoux2000how].
  2. Researched the corpus: CHIC (1996) with 331 objects and 144 signs, the Petras archive, the Vrysinas prism, the Knossos cult-centre seal, and the 2024 Cambridge volume and its BMCR review [@olivier1996chic] [@tsipopoulou2010petras] [@hallager2012vrysinas] [@kanta2022seal] [@civitillo2024cretan] [@donnelly2026bmcr].
  3. Read the INSCRIBE-era reassessments: the 2021 sign-list revision to about 98 signs (open access, CC BY), the 2023 study of excluded seal motifs, the 2022 comparison with Linear A, and Ferrara's 2024 survey of the repertoires [@montecchi2021rationalizing] [@ferrara2023lostsigns] [@ferrara2022relationship] [@ferrara2024repertoires].
  4. Read the Ariadne 2024 paper on the Knossos Anetaki finds and confirmed that the long ivory inscription (KN Zg 57, 58) is Linear A, not Cretan Hieroglyphic, though carved in the hieroglyphic seal style; it is recorded only to separate it from this corpus [@kanta2024anetaki].
  5. Recorded the readings outside the specialist literature (Luwian, Sumerian-derived Protolinear, Uralic) with the tests they have not passed [@woudhuizen2002trowel] [@kenanidis2016protolinear] [@revesz2017cretan].
  6. Checked digital resources: no machine-readable corpus, DBAS-CHS restricted to personal and scientific use, INSCRIBE 3D models view-only, linear0.xyz without a licence, and no Unicode range or proposal on the SMP roadmap [@dbas-chs] [@inscribe-ch-3d] [@linear0-site] [@unicode-smp-roadmap]. Nothing was openly licensed and small enough to upload as data; four CC BY-SA photographs from Commons were uploaded as copies.
  7. Published 32 sources, 10 places, 8 figures, the mystery with lead photograph, 10 events, 5 artifacts with 5 copies, 5 datasets, 6 key questions and 2 sub-questions, 15 answers and 18 evidence items, and next steps on the language and seals questions.
