Rationalizing the Cretan Hieroglyphic sign-list
Barbara Montecchi, Silvia Ferrara, Miguel Valério, 2021.
What it's used for here
Kadmos 60(1-2), pp. 5 to 32, open access CC BY 4.0. The first systematic reassessment of the CHIC sign list: reviews the 144 signs by diagnostic traits, complementary distribution and contextual alternation, proposes eleven groups of mergers, removes or reassigns a few signs to Linear A, drops the assumed syllabogram/logogram split, and arrives at about 98 signs if all proposals hold, with hapax signs reduced from 33 to about 18. Source for the sign inventory and its uncertainty.
