Session 1: The Eye of the Sahara and the Atlantis claim: literature review and question tree
Built the mystery from the published record: the geology of the Richat dome, its Palaeolithic archaeology, Plato's Timaeus and Critias, and the Atlantis identification from 2006 to the 2018 video, with the specialists' reply to each match.
What it concluded
- The rings are a natural igneous dome about 100 million years old; the impact reading is ruled out. The Atlantis identification fails on every point that can be tested: size, setting, height above the sea, sea level at the time, and the absence of any built remains. The open questions are geological (the age of the gabbro rings) and archaeological (the age of the pebble-tool and Acheulean sites).
What it left open
- Date the gabbro rings robustly and check their field relations against the sill model.
- Measure the rings from elevation data and test them against Plato's figures with the ring chosen in advance.
- Obtain Prince 2004 and Sao 2010 on the stratigraphy of the pebble-tool sites.
- Find any published record of Neolithic sites or tumuli at the structure.
- Read the full texts of the paywalled papers used here from their abstracts.
