Answer · Eye of the Sahara and Atlantis

Yes: the Atlantic flooded this part of the Sahara about 12,000 years ago and the land has risen since

About 12,000 years ago the Atlantic reached the Richat, which then lay near sea level; the land has since been raised to its present height, and salt in the structure is a trace of the sea.

Where it stands

Still possibleOne piece of evidence for, two against. It needs two reviews to be accepted.

What it predicts

  • Marine sediments, shells or beach deposits of late Pleistocene age at or near the structure.
  • Global or regional sea level within the last 12,000 years at or near the Richat's present height.
  • Evidence of several hundred metres of uplift of the Adrar plateau since the end of the last Ice Age.

What would rule it out

  • Dated sediments at the structure over the last 15,000 years that are wholly continental.
  • A sea-level record showing the ocean lower than today throughout the period.
