Answer · Eye of the Sahara and Atlantis

The gabbro rings are Central Atlantic Magmatic Province sills of 230 to 200 Ma, domed about 100 million years later

The gabbros are two sills of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province, intruded flat into the sedimentary sequence between 230 and 200 million years ago and bent into rings when the Cretaceous alkaline intrusion domed them about 100 million years later.

Where it stands

Still possibleOne piece of evidence for, two against. It needs two reviews to be accepted.

What it predicts

  • A robust age on the gabbros (for example U-Pb on zircon or baddeleyite) near 200 Ma.
  • Gabbro chemistry matching the CAMP groups of north-west Africa.
  • The gabbro bodies lie parallel to the bedding, as sills, and are folded with it.

What would rule it out

  • A robust gabbro age within the Cretaceous complex's range, about 104 to 94 Ma.
  • Field evidence that the gabbros cut across the bedding as steep ring dykes.
