Le lac Tritonis et les noms anciens du chott el Jérid

Jean Peyras, Pol Trousset, 1988. Antiquités africaines 24: 149-204.

Shows that ancient writers disagreed on where Lake Tritonis was: the Herodotean tradition points to the Gulf of Gabès, Pseudo-Scylax to the Lesser Syrtis, Pliny to between the Syrtes, Strabo to Cyrenaica; only Mela, and perhaps Ptolemy, put it inland, which fits the great chotts, already cut off from the sea in antiquity. Gives Madd lacus as a Roman name of the Chott el Djerid.
