Lake Tritonis (Chott el Djerid)
Herodotus's and Diodorus's lake, one of its proposed sites
Note
Position from Wikidata Q849143 for the Chott el Djerid. Herodotus (4.178) has the river Triton running into a great Tritonian lake; Diodorus (3.53–55) puts the Amazons on an island in the marsh Tritonis, which vanished in an earthquake. Where the ancients meant is disputed: Peyras and Trousset (1988) show that the Herodotean tradition points to the Gulf of Gabès, other writers to the Lesser Syrtis, Cyrenaica or between the Syrtes, and only Mela, and perhaps Ptolemy, to an inland lake such as the great chotts. Herrmann identified the Chott el Djerid with both Tritonis and Atlantis in 1927–1931.
