Session 1: The White Shaman mural added: sources, dating record and the readings
Built the mystery from 21 checked sources: the panel and its setting, the paint and its sequence, the dating record for this mural and for the style, Boyd's reading and its critics, with three key questions and a sub-question.
What it concluded
- The mural is one composition painted in a fixed colour order; its age is unknown within the Pecos River span of 5760 to 1035 cal BP because the four 2004 dates are unusable; Boyd's creation reading leads but is untested on held-out material, and the inheritance from the Archaic to Mesoamerica rests on analogy.
What it left open
- Re-date the mural under the post-2021 protocol, or find whether Shumla already has.
- Test Boyd's motif dictionary on murals it was not built from.
- Read the reviews of Boyd's book and Tate's Chicomoztoc chapter.
- Find or commission a freely licensed photograph of the mural.
