The Lack of “Creativity” in Pre-Columbian Art: The Impact of Terence Grieder’s Early Scholarship on Recent Rock Art Studies

James Farmer, 2022. Making “Meaning”: Precolumbian Archaeology, Art History, and the Legacy of Terence Grieder.

An art historian's review of how Grieder's method shaped rock art studies, with Boyd's White Shaman reading as a case. Farmer finds it compelling and generally persuasive, but notes that iconography points to Mesoamerica while style does not, that virtually no hard archaeological evidence of Mesoamerican presence in the Pecos area has surfaced, and that Boyd sets aside northern Uto-Aztecan sources such as Hopi ethnography.
