Chemical distinctions between Stradivari's maple and modern tonewood

Hwan-Ching Tai, Guo-Chian Li, Shing-Jong Huang et al., 2017. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 114, 27–32.

Solid-state 13C NMR, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and ICP-MS on maple from four Stradivari instruments and a Guarneri. About a third of the hemicellulose has decomposed; elemental profiles suggest mineral treatment with Al, Ca, Cu, Na, K and Zn.
