Ancient DNA
Genetic material recovered from old remains, read to tell who someone was and who they were related to.
DNA survives in bone and teeth for tens of thousands of years, degraded but readable. It has named Franklin expedition sailors from their bones, told the Tarim Basin mummies' ancestry, and put the Denisovans on the human family tree from a finger bone and a jaw. Contamination and damage are the standing problems; a result is trusted when it is repeated in another laboratory.

Somerton Man (Tamam Shud)

Late Bronze Age collapse
Ancient DNA from Ashkelon shows a migration at the transition, but not whether migrants were a cause or a consequence .
Lost Colony of Roanoke
Ancient DNA from burials of the right age in either area, compared with English and Algonquian reference genomes, could show whether colonists' descendants lived there.
Etruscan: the readable language that cannot be fully translated
The third concerns origins rather than language: ancient DNA from Lemnos and from the Raetic Alps, compared with the Etruscan transect, would show whether the three Tyrsenian populations share recent ancestry or only a…
