At 3.18 Aelian retells Theopompus's story of Silenus telling Midas of a continent beyond the ocean, its cities Machimus and Eusebes, and the Meropes, whose army of a thousand myriads crossed the ocean and reached the Hyperboreans. Aelian calls Theopompus "an egregious Romancer".
