Radiocarbon dating of prehistoric rock paintings by selective oxidation of organic carbon
Jon Russ, Marian Hyman, Harry J. Shafer et al., 1990. Nature 348.
The first use of low-temperature oxygen plasma to extract organic carbon from an inorganic-pigmented rock painting for AMS dating, on a Pecos River style figure at 41VV75 (3865 plus or minus 100 radiocarbon years BP, as later tabulated by Steelman and colleagues).
What it's used for here
The start of direct dating in the Lower Pecos.
