Spectroscopic Distance Measurements of Atmospheric Continuum Light Sources (e. g. Marfa lights)
Sagar Ghimire, Karl Stephan, 2008. American Physical Society meeting abstract, 2008.
Meeting abstract by two Texas State researchers on their 20-night field campaign with a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and a CCD-array spectrometer. None of the sightings fully met the criteria for true Marfa lights; they recorded headlight spectra and estimated distances from the oxygen absorption band near 760 nm, which matched map distances to within about 1.4 km for sources beyond 4 km.
What it's used for here
Meeting abstract reporting that none of the lights seen in 20 nights met the criteria for true Marfa lights, and that oxygen-band ranging matched map distances to about 1.4 km beyond 4 km.
