Ecosystem impacts by the Ancestral Puebloans of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, USA

David L. Lentz, Venicia Slotten, Nicholas P. Dunning et al., 2021. PLOS ONE 16(10): e0258369.

Pollen and plant remains show the canyon's pinyon-juniper woodland was cut back from Late Archaic and Basketmaker II times and decimated by the Bonito phase, which the authors argue destabilised the landscape before the departure; they also argue the canyon was a lived-in farming community, not only a periodic ceremonial centre.
