Monumental – compared to what? A perspective from Göbekli Tepe

Moritz Kinzel, Lee Clare, 2020. Monumentalising Life in the Neolithic: Narratives of Continuity and Change (Oxbow).

The current DAI team's reassessment: the enclosures were rebuilt and repaired over long periods, were likely roofed, and the fills accumulated partly by slope processes rather than one deliberate burial. The site is described as a settlement with special buildings, with cisterns, domestic structures and grinding tools on the mound.
