The rongorongo tablet from Berlin and the time-depth of Easter Island's writing system

Rafał M. Wieczorek, Kamil E. Frankiewicz, Alexei A. Oskolski et al., 2023. Journal of Island and Coastal Archaeology 18(2).

Wood identification, radiocarbon dating and photogrammetry of the Berlin tablet (text O). The wood is Thespesia populnea, a tree that grew on Rapa Nui, so not driftwood. The date, adjusted with the ethnographic record, is about 1830 to 1870. About 90 per cent of the surface was destroyed in a cave; the original text is estimated at over 5,000 glyphs. Pages 309 to 328; published online 2021.
