The phylogenetic position of the Yunxian cranium elucidates the origin of Homo longi and the Denisovans

Xiaobo Feng, Qiyu Yin, Feng Gao et al., 2025. Science 389(6767): 1320-1324.

A digital restoration of the distorted, roughly one-million-year-old Yunxian 2 cranium. Morphometric and phylogenetic analyses place it as an early member of the Asian H. longi clade, which includes the Denisovans and is the main part of the sister group of H. sapiens; both clades have roots beyond the Middle Pleistocene.
