X-ray Dating of a Turin Shroud's Linen Sample

Liberato De Caro, Teresa Sibillano, Rocco Lassandro et al., 2022. Heritage 5(2): 860-870.

Wide-angle X-ray scattering of a 0.5 x 1 mm thread taken near the 1988 sampling area. The cellulose degradation profile matches a linen from the siege of Masada (AD 55-74), and the authors find the cloth much older than seven centuries, provided it was kept at 20.0-22.5 °C and 55-75% relative humidity for 13 centuries of unknown history.
