Towards Ancient Meroitic Decipherment: A Computational Approach

Joshua Otten, Antonios Anastasopoulos, 2025. Proceedings of the Second Workshop on Ancient Language Processing (ALP 2025), ACL, pp. 87 to 98.

Builds what it calls the first machine-readable Meroitic corpus (871 texts and phrases from Lobban's vocabulary, Rilly 2007 and Millet 1968, plus three long royal texts), augments it by swapping names, trains word embeddings and tries cross-lingual alignment with Late Egyptian. Notes that the REM survives only as page images.
