AI-accelerated Nazca survey nearly doubles the number of known figurative geoglyphs and sheds light on their purpose
Masato Sakai, Akihisa Sakurai, Siyuan Lu et al., 2024. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
303 new figurative geoglyphs found in six months of AI-guided survey, nearly doubling the 430 known. Relief-type figures (small, mostly humans, domesticated animals and trophy heads) lie on average 43 m from trails; line-type figures (giant, mostly wild animals) lie on average 34 m from the line and trapezoid network.
