Operation Deepscan

Adrian Shine, n.d.. Loch Ness Project (lochnessproject.org), Fieldwork and Groundtruth.

The organiser's account of Operation Deepscan (1987): twenty boats with echo sounders swept the loch in line; most contacts proved fixed, but three, stronger than fish echoes and deeper, had gone when revisited and remain unexplained. Also reports that seals visit the loch almost every year, that the deep water column is barren, and that the Simrad-supported Operation Echo (1987–1991) made the first quantitative acoustic estimate of the open-water fish population, about 20 tonnes.
