Source of phosphine on Venus—An unsolved problem

William Bains, Sara Seager, David L. Clements et al., 2024. Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences 11, 1372057.

Review of gas-phase, surface and subsurface geochemistry, photochemistry and other non-equilibrium routes: none makes phosphine near the observed abundance. Either Venus chemistry is significantly incomplete or, more speculatively, an aerial microbial biosphere produces it.
