Phosphine gas in the cloud decks of Venus

Jane S. Greaves, Anita M. S. Richards, William Bains et al., 2020. Nature Astronomy 5(7), 655–664.

The claim. Single-line detections of the phosphine 1–0 rotational line at 266.94 GHz with the JCMT (June 2017) and ALMA (5 March 2019), at up to about 15 sigma, interpreted as about 20 ppb of phosphine. The authors find no known abiotic source and mention, by analogy with Earth, possible biological production.
