Four thousand years of stable rules and motifs in Pecos River painting

From about 5,500 to about 1,300 years ago Pecos River muralists kept the same colour order and core motifs (power bundles, single-pole ladders, stylised dart tips, speech breath) through changes in climate, technology and land use, which shows a tradition able to carry ideas over very long spans.
