Found "CRO" carved on a tree and "CROATOAN" on a palisade post five feet up, without the agreed cross of distress; the houses taken down and the place enclosed by a high palisade of trees; iron bars, lead and heavy guns left in the grass; five chests the colonists had buried dug up and broken open.
