Where it stands

Most likelyIts tests partly supported it: three pieces of evidence for, one against. It needs two reviews to be accepted.

What it predicts

  • No other agent (carnivore, water, gravity from a surface shaft) can deliver bodies to the chambers.
  • Remains are concentrated where a route from the entrance would bring them, not spread as a natural trap spreads them.
  • Some evidence of repeated use (remains of different ages and states of preservation).

What would rule it out

  • A dated opening above the chambers through which bodies could fall or be washed in during the time of deposition, or evidence that other animals accumulated with the hominins.
