The Great Sphinx of Giza
About 73 m long and 20 m high, cut from Members I to III of the Mokattam Formation. The nose was lost before the fifteenth century; al-Maqrizi blamed a Sufi iconoclast in 1378. The body was cleared and repaired many times, so the original carved surface is visible only in places beneath the cladding.
