Phonotactic Complexity and Its Trade-offs
Tiago Pimentel, Brian Roark, Ryan Cotterell, 2020. Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics.
Measures how complex a language's sound sequences are in bits per phoneme and, across 106 languages, finds that languages with more complex phonotactics tend to have shorter words.
What it's used for here
The survey on linguistic methods and datasets names it as a candidate measure for syllable-structure inference, not yet applied to the manuscript.
