Families of Plausible Solutions to the Puzzle of Boyajian's Star
Jason T. Wright, Steinn Sigurdsson, 2016. The Astrophysical Journal Letters 829(1), L3.
Surveys the space of explanations after the fade results: a cloud in the outer Solar System, structure in the interstellar medium, natural or artificial material orbiting the star, an intervening object with a large disk, and variations in the star itself. Finds the dip timings consistent with random and rates the interstellar and intervening-disk models as the more plausible natural ones.
What it's used for here
The map of rival explanations and the randomness of dip timing.
