Questioning the Reliability of Methane Detections on Mars by the Curiosity Rover

Sébastien Viscardy, David C. Catling, Kevin Zahnle, 2025. Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets 130(4), e2024JE008441.

Re-analyses published TLS data. The foreoptics chamber held methane three to four orders of magnitude above the sample cell, with unexplained pressure changes; leaks of under 0.1 per cent of foreoptics methane could explain the atmospheric values and would be invisible in housekeeping data. Averaging the three R3-triplet lines as if independent likely underestimates uncertainties. Proposes a two-step test.
