A.T. Kempton's Fake Inscription
Richard E. Joltes, n.d.. Critical Enquiry (criticalenquiry.org).
Traces the cipher printed as the inscribed stone's symbols to Edward Rowe Snow's True Tales of Buried Treasure (1949, p. 32), which credits the Rev. A. T. Kempton, and to Kempton's 1949 correspondence with Frederick Blair in the R. V. Harris papers. The stone was never drawn or photographed before it disappeared.
What it's used for here
Dates and sources the familiar cipher as a 1949 reconstruction.
