Transcranial stimulability of phosphenes by long lightning electromagnetic pulses

J. Peer, A. Kendl, 2010. Physics Letters A 374, 2932–2935.

Argued that the magnetic fields of long repetitive lightning discharges within about 100 m are comparable to those of clinical transcranial magnetic stimulation, so that many luminous perceptions during storms could be phosphenes. An erratum and addendum (doi:10.1016/j.physleta.2010.09.071) corrects the comparison: induced fields are more than an order of magnitude smaller for average lightning, and reach phosphene thresholds only within metres, or at about 50 m for short pulses.
