Tales of the Superstitions: The Origins of the Lost Dutchman's Legend
Robert Blair, 1975. Arizona Historical Foundation, Tempe.
The one source-critical history of the legend. Traces the documented Jacob Waltz (an 1848 affidavit, the 1870 homestead, the 1891 death), separates the Peralta, Dr Thorne and soldiers' stories that were later fused into the tale, shows the Peralta mine was in California and that no Dr Thorne served the Army, and argues the whole has been garbled by retelling.
