A Bright Millisecond Radio Burst of Extragalactic Origin

D. R. Lorimer, M. Bailes, M. A. McLaughlin et al., 2007. Science 318(5851), 777–780.

The first fast radio burst, found in archival Parkes pulsar-survey data: a 30 Jy dispersed burst shorter than 5 ms, three degrees from the Small Magellanic Cloud, with a dispersion implying a distance under 1 Gpc. No further bursts in 90 hours of follow-up; the authors suggest a singular event and predict hundreds a day.
