Acceleration of 1I/'Oumuamua from radiolytically produced H2 in H2O ice

Jennifer B. Bergner, Darryl Z. Seligman, 2023. Nature.

Proposes that cosmic rays produced molecular hydrogen inside an ordinary water-ice planetesimal during its interstellar journey, and that warming near the Sun released it from the annealing amorphous ice, giving the acceleration without a dust coma. Rests on laboratory work on irradiated ice. Nature 615, 610-613. Code and data on GitHub.
