Astronomy and Stonehenge

Clive Ruggles, 1997. Science and Stonehenge, ed. Barry Cunliffe and Colin Renfrew, Proceedings of the British Academy 92: 203-229.

Reviews the astronomical claims for Stonehenge phase by phase against the excavation plans of Cleal et al. 1995. Tables 7 and 8 give the Phase 3 axis and the 'solar corridor' at azimuth 49° to the north-east (declination +24°, midsummer sunrise) and 229° to the south-west (-24°, midwinter sunset), and the Station Stone rectangle's sides at 49° and 116° to 140°. Finds no case for an observatory.
