The Entropy of Words–-Learnability and Expressivity across More than 1000 Languages
Christian Bentz, Dimitrios Alikaniotis, Michael Cysouw et al., 2017. Entropy 19(6): 275.
Estimates word entropy in 1,259 languages from three parallel corpora, dealing with the effects of text size, register and estimation method. Unigram entropies fall in a narrow range and track the entropy rate closely.
What it's used for here
The book refits its cross-linguistic relation between word entropy and entropy rate and places the Voynich text against it; the linguistics and datasets survey ranks this test first among under-tried techniques.
