flyby perigee (ground point)
Note
The point on the ground beneath MESSENGER at closest approach (2005-08-02 19:13:08 UTC), over central Mongolia, computed from JPL Horizons' reconstructed trajectory (sub-observer point, geodetic; distance 8,715 km from Earth's centre). Acedo (2017) tabulates the same perigee's geocentric latitude. The MESSENGER team put the closest approach "over central Mongolia" at 3:13 p.m. EDT.
