Session 9: The inquiry framework, the inductive battery, generated hypotheses and readings
2026-10-22 · ledger S-006 · explore · Kyle Prier, Claude (Anthropic)
Surveys of inquiry frameworks and inductive methods; the artifact-agnostic inquiry toolkit, with the whole project migrated into its ledger; a fourteen-method inductive battery against null texts; an exploration/confirmation split; generated hypotheses with readings, eight predictions tested on the held-back half; the v0.1 theory re-registered; ACH per question. The website's first looks were mocked from the real ledger.

The session's log
Date: 2026-10-22
- Surveys: inquiry frameworks across deduction, induction and abduction, including non-academic practice (Zodiac 340, Linear B work notes, Kryptos/Tamam Shud, Bellingcat, ACH, differential diagnosis, superforecasting, Polymath, morphological boxes) →
REPORT_inquiry_framework.md; inductive methods from fourteen fields with a ranked top 15 and a battery design →REPORT_inductive_methods.md. - Built the artifact-agnostic toolkit
mysteriesdept/inquiry(data model, ledger store with lint and freeze, inqCLI with resume/state/ach/box/export/tex, ACH scoring per question with capped likelihood ratios and an under-tested flag, hypothesis box, website builder with two themes, screenshot tool). FRAMEWORK.md (method) and README.md (use). - Migrated the whole inquiry into the Voynich ledger (
inquiry/ledger/): 6 sessions, 23 questions, 59 findings, 53 hypotheses (25 registered + H-STRUCT-REPEAT + 10 v0.1 claims re-registered + 7 generated + 4 genre + 6 theory leads), 8 readings, 14 theories in three contrast sets, 135 evidence links, 245 runs (the 81 rows of results.csv plus this session's), 10 next steps. Lint clean; migration re-runs from the sources. - Data layer (
inductive/out/tokens.parquet, 38,077 tokens with page, quire, bifolium, section, scribe, language, locus, line, position) and an exploration/confirmation split by bifolium (106/101 pages, SHA-256 d58bdc56...). - Inductive battery (14 methods × manuscript, sectioned Latin, slot grammar, shuffled), on all pages and on half E: topics, word classes, Morfessor, change points, seriation, NCD, co-occurrence communities, unseen vocabulary, layout information, Delta, isolation forest, paradigm grid, A↔B alignment, pigment.
- Generated hypotheses (box, differential, model-assisted) with readings (reading × encoding), and tested eight predictions on half C: -m is a line-final form of -in/-n (31 % vs 2.4 %, z 26); herbal pages open with a page-specific word (71 % vs 31 %; Latin 18 vs 24); A and B are two modes, not a drift; pharmacy labels are not herbal-text words; first glyphs carry three times Latin's topic information; lines are not repeated templates; short words are not commoner in recipes; prefix vs ending context similarity about equal.
- v0.1 reassessed: its lexical readings refuted at precondition; its constructed-language and astrological-medicine framings re-registered as open hypotheses with successor readings; its ol- claim partly holds (ol- commonest in the bathing pages).
- Synthesis: current account written into the ledger; ACH per question (notational answers least contradicted but least tested; natural language, cipher and generated text most contradicted; genre answers all under-tested).
- Mockups: website in two looks (W1 Atlas, W2 Observatory) built from the real ledger and screenshotted at 2×, plus book figures B1a, B1b and B2, in a private design-review page. Awaiting sign-off before building further pages or adding the figures to the book.
- Open: sign-off on the site look and book figures; mock the remaining pages; second rater for evidence links; the layout-layer normalisation; text-image correspondence on the herbal pages.
