Where it stands

Why it matters

Winn listed 210 signs and reduced them to about 30 core shapes with variants; Haarmann counts 700 to 1,000 components; Merlini's DatDas holds 5,421 sign occurrences but is not published as data[1][2][3]. Mäder found that Winn's list rotated and merged marks arbitrarily, so the inventory itself is in dispute[4]. In the open corpus 72 of 185 sign types occur once, which is what a mark system, not a script, looks like[5].
