Answer · Vinča signs
The signs are ancestral to the Aegean scripts
The Vinča signs are the ancestor of Linear A and the other Aegean scripts, which inherited about half their sign shapes from the Danube script.
Where it stands
Still possibleOne piece of evidence for, one against. It needs two reviews to be accepted.
What it predicts
- Sign-shape matches between the Vinča inventory and Linear A exceed those between Vinča and an unrelated script of similar size (for example Old Elamite or Proto-Sinaitic) under the same matching rules.
- Intermediate sign-bearing material of the fourth and early third millennia BC exists in the north Aegean linking the two.
What would rule it out
- Matching Vinča shapes against unrelated scripts under the same rules gives the same hit rate as against Linear A.
- No intermediate corpus is found and the Aegean scripts are shown to arise from Cretan hieroglyphic within Crete.
