Why it matters

Of about 359 Hattic fragments from Hattusa, 15 carry a Hittite translation, and 34 more bilingual fragments come from Ortaköy; everything securely known of the vocabulary comes from these[1][2][3]. Hittite ritual texts also paraphrase Hattic recitations without translating them line by line, and searching the Hethitologie-Portal Mainz corpus for such quasi-bilinguals has produced new word meanings as recently as 2023[4][5].
