Answer · Byblos syllabary
Undetermined: the texts cannot yet be assigned to a language
The language is undetermined: probably Semitic given the place, but the corpus of about 1,000 signs without a bilingual cannot yet show which language, and no proposed reading has passed an independent test.
Where it stands
Still possibleTwo pieces of evidence for, none against. It needs two reviews to be accepted.
What it predicts
- Sequence analysis finds morpheme structure, but it is compatible with more than one language family.
- Externally anchored values from the seal, when found, will rule out several existing readings before they confirm any.
- No reading will account for all 15 inscriptions with one sign list until the corpus grows.
What would rule it out
- A reading that passes the seal bilingual, reads every inscription with one consistent sign list and matches the independently found morpheme boundaries.
- Discovery of a bilingual or of a long new text that fixes the language.
