Answer · Byblos syllabary
Northwest Semitic with Akkadian and Hurrian elements (Best, Woudhuizen)
The Byblos tablets record a Northwest Semitic text with Akkadian and Hurrian loanwords, a temple dedication to the sun god Shuraya, read through sign parallels with Cretan Hieroglyphic and Linear A.
Where it stands
Still possibleNone pieces of evidence for, two against. It needs two reviews to be accepted.
What it predicts
- Best's values read the names on the Akhenaten-daughters seal.
- The Hurrian and Akkadian words identified recur across the spatulas and stone fragments in plausible positions.
- The four punctuation signs behave as dividers in every text, not only on the tablets.
What would rule it out
- Failure on the seal bilingual, which Schmutz and Mäder report.
- A logogram share far below the roughly one third implied by the phonetisation degree, which they also report.
- The punctuation sign occurring mid-word in the sequence data.
