Dendrochronology
Dating wood by matching the pattern of its growth rings to a known sequence.
Trees add a ring a year, thick in good years and thin in bad, so the pattern of rings in a timber can be matched against a master sequence built from overlapping samples, giving the year the tree was cut. It dates the oak of violins, the timbers of wrecks and the posts of ancient buildings to the year, where the wood survives and the sequence exists. It also underpins the radiocarbon calibration curve.
