# Cretan 'Hieroglyphic' and the nature of script

Roeland P.-J. E. Decorte, 2017.

**Cretan Hieroglyphic** Chapter0

## What it's used for here

Chapter 3 (pp. 33 to 56) of P. M. Steele (ed.), Understanding Relations Between Scripts: The Aegean Writing Systems, Oxbow Books, Oxford, 2017. Argues that every mark on a Cretan Hieroglyphic seal, including the motifs CHIC called decorative fillers and the punctuation, belongs to one integrated graphic syntax, so that the division into script and ornament is an artefact of the editors rather than of the Minoans. The URL is the CREWS project announcement listing the chapters; the chapter itself is in print.
