# The Commentaries of Proclus on the Timaeus of Plato, vol. 1

Proclus, 1820.

Proclus (c. 410–485) reports that Crantor, "the first interpreter of Plato", took the Atlantis story as plain history, that Plato was mocked for copying Egyptian institutions, and that the Egyptian prophets said it was written on pillars still preserved (p. 64). He cites Marcellus's Ethiopic History for seven islands in the outer sea sacred to Proserpine and three larger ones sacred to Pluto, Ammon and Neptune, whose people kept a memory of the Atlantic island (p. 148).
