# Spectroscopic Distance Measurements of Atmospheric Continuum Light Sources (e. g. Marfa lights)

Sagar Ghimire, Karl Stephan, 2008. _American Physical Society meeting abstract, 2008_.

Meeting abstract by two Texas State researchers on their 20-night field campaign with a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and a CCD-array spectrometer. None of the sightings fully met the criteria for true Marfa lights; they recorded headlight spectra and estimated distances from the oxygen absorption band near 760 nm, which matched map distances to within about 1.4 km for sources beyond 4 km.

## What it's used for here

Meeting abstract reporting that none of the lights seen in 20 nights met the criteria for true Marfa lights, and that oxygen-band ranging matched map distances to about 1.4 km beyond 4 km.
